Welcome to the Community Free Studio!

The free art studio at Spring Street Gallery is open every Sunday 11AM - 5PM

January through April

The studio's purpose is to serve as an art playground for all ages and all skill levels, and to make art supplies and social connection available to all. This program is self-guided so participants can work on whatever project they want, from painting a personal masterpiece to scribbling in a coloring book while chatting.

Our workspace offers

  • acrylic, oil, and watercolor paints

  • oil pastels and colored and charcoal pencils

  • sketchbooks and canvases

  • colored and patterned crafting paper and glitter paper

  • wood plates for painting and carving

  • polymer modeling and potter's clay

  • handsculpting and carving tools

  • stencils and stamp making supplies

  • fabric markers and canvas bags ready to be customized

  • found and foraged materials including sea glass, tiddlywinks, starfish and sea shells, and more for mixed media and mosaic art

  • ornament decorating

  • fabrics, ribbons, and more for fiber arts

  • die cutting supplies

Plus plenty of tools and miscellaneous materials for anything else you can come up with!

Most of the supplies are beginner-friendly for anyone interested in trying something unfamiliar, and this year the studio is able to offer more professional materials for experienced participants. You are also welcome to bring in your own materials to use while you pursue your project in a shared space.

This art program is not focused on technical achievement but on the practice of engaging with your own creativity without judgement. Creativity is something inherent to every person in their own way. Allowing yourself to explore what that means to you without critical evaluation or the expectation of selling a product is a great vehicle for expression and introspection. The free studio is here to provide anyone with the space and supplies to explore their own creative instincts and spend time around others in an unstructured and uncritical environment.

Participants are welcome to socialize as actively or passively as they like.

This all-ages program is sponsored through Town of New Shoreham mini-grants and personal donations. The program has reached over 100 people in its first year thanks to your support. Thank you to everyone who has helped keep the free studio accessible!

Material donations are welcome. If you have leftover and unwanted art supplies, please consider donating them to this community non-profit program. For questions about the free studio or to make a donation, contact Erin at e.hk.groll@gmail.com.
